Have Questions About Orthodontics?

  • When should my child see an orthodontist?
According to American Association of Orthodontists, it’s highly recommended to visit an orthodontist at the age of seven. The orthodontist can identify and correct any potential issues with jaw and tooth development before they become major problems. Issues with tooth alignment, crowding, spacing, jaw growth, and bite positions are more easily treated before or during adolescence while your child is still growing. By visiting an orthodontist early, you can help your child grow a healthy beautiful smile and avoid having to do major corrections later.
  • What type of braces are available?
There are several treatment options in orthodontics. Depending on your child’s case, he or she may undergo:

    • Traditional Metal Braces: Stainless steel metal brackets and wires use a gentle force to guide teeth to their appropriate positions.
    • Ceramic Braces: Clear brackets and wires, working similar to traditional braces, but translucent (almost invisible!).
    • Clear Aligners: Brands such as Invisalign use clear, plastic aligners to straighten teeth while being removable. This allows patients to enjoy their favorite foods and brush/floss teeth normally.
    • Retainers: After finishing treatment with braces or other orthodontic appliances, your child will probably be given a retainer to wear to help prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Retainers are worn for a lifetime to maintain the position of the teeth.

To learn more about the treatments available, we invite you to visit the American Association of Orthodontists.

  • Will braces hurt?
Some soreness is to be expected, particularly when the braces are first put on and after some adjustments. Your child’s teeth, lips, and cheeks will become more used to the braces over time and the soreness will fade. If the soreness is uncomfortable, you may want to give them an over-the-counter pain medicine (whatever they generally take for headaches or other pains). If the braces rub against the cheeks or tongue, rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp. salt dissolved in 1 cup of water) to clean and soothe the area. They can also use the wax your orthodontist will provide to cover rough edges and prevent the braces from rubbing their mouth. If your child experiences severe pain or has a problem that you don’t know how to deal with at home, call the orthodontist.
  • Should my child brush and floss during treatment?
Yes! Absolutely! We cannot stress this enough. Staying on top of their dental care routine and oral health during orthodontic treatment is extremely important to ensure your child’s gums and teeth are in tip-top shape. While wearing braces, it is highly recommended that your child should brush thoroughly three times a day for 4-5 minutes each time. They should also floss once each day. They should pay special attention to removing food particles from between the braces and their gum line. Have them look closely in the mirror after brushing and brush again if they see any food or white, fuzzy plaque. During your orthodontic visits, your orthodontist will show you some tools your child can use to thoroughly clean their teeth and braces and develop an excellent dental care routine.
  • If my children have braces, should they visit Smile Surfers every six months?
Yes! It’s even more important to have your child visit us during orthodontic treatment. With braces, food may be caught between the brackets and wires that your toothbrush can’t reach, which we can get rid of for you. These regular checkups will allow us to check for cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease and take necessary action to prevent future problems while your child is wearing braces.
